(Extra) Generic Tutorial: Stiff Parts Hair Dryer

A tightly wound figure leads to bad times, so let's loosen them up!

In this guide, we will show you how to loosen up some figures. Unlike the other guides, the recommended and most common fix is not what you would expect. On top of this, this guide will show ONE of the TWO MOST POPULAR fixes for tight parts: a Hair Dryer!

Pre Fix Checklist

This tutorial will show you how to use the most effective fix for stiff parts on figures, which is simply heating the figure in question using a hair dryer.

Repair Workflow: Using a Hair Dryer to Loosen Up Figures

Expand each stage for exact actions, timing, and stop signs.

1

Stage 1: Diagnose Where The Issue Is

Unmute to listen to stiff noises figures make. (Video from Reddit)

Identify what pieces are stiff so you can heat them up.

  • Finding the location of the stiff parts you wish to loosen up is fairly easy, simply because you cannot move them easily or because you hear an infernal creaking sound. These are indicators of stiff joints or pieces.
  • ⚠Note: Stiff joints can be caused by various reasons, but while this dryer method fixes a large majority of them, there is a chance it simply may not work.
  • ⚠Note: We will be showcasing this fix with this Mantacora figure by SexyIce. Unfortunately, for the video portion of the guide we have already loosened up this copy, so we cannot really show it on video. BUT Mantacora is notorious for being incredibly stiff across the internet, so this is why we will be using this Mantacora figure for the images.

Stage 2: Rev Up The Heater

After isolating what piece(s) are stiff, in this case the shoulder ball joint, the next thing to do is point the dryer at it and warm up that problem piece.

  • On this Mantacora figure, the ball joint on its shoulder is the problem location for our copy. I will be pointing the dryer toward that area.
  • ⚠NOTE: Hair dryers can get really hot, duh. But something else to understand is that you SHOULD NOT LET THE GRILL ON THE DRYER TOUCH YOUR FIGURE! This might cause the piece to literally melt since it is even hotter than the air it blows.
  • After a few minutes (if unsure, wait until the figure becomes really warm or hot). When you feel comfortable to begin, start GENTLY moving the problem piece.
  • ⚠NOTE: WARM AND HOT DOES NOT MEAN BURNING TO TOUCH! Similar to how we do not want the grill to touch the figure, we also do not want to melt the figure. This is very dependent on the figure in question since, depending on its conductivity, some parts will warm up faster or slower than others. BE AWARE AND ALERT OF THE TEMPERATURE OF YOUR FIGURE AT ALL TIMES!
3

Stage 3: Check and Clean Up

This method is one of the most popular and the first thing people think to do when a figure is stiff, but it is always good to check if it worked.

  • Now that your figure is hopefully a lot more loose, it is best to check if this fix worked by gently moving the problem part of the figure.
  • ⚠NOTE: It is very important to move the problem part GENTLY! The reason for this is because of the chance this fix was ineffective. Roughly moving this figure in this state could cause it to snap.
  • In the case that your figure has not loosened up, reheat the figure again. But instead of letting it rest, gently move the problem part until it becomes easier to move.
  • ⚠NOTE: DO NOT OVERHEAT THE FIGURE OR PLACE IT IN A COLD AREA IMMEDIATELY AFTER HEATING IT. THIS COULD CAUSE THE FIGURE TO CRACK OR SNAP!

Done!

And that is pretty much it!
